A heat dome is a large high pressure region that sits over the central US. This phenomenon occurs during the summer months when the jet stream moves north over the northern US and southern Canada. The dome of high pressure prevents cooler arctic air from moving south. This July the heat dome has really taken a hold of the US, resulting in average temperatures across much of the nation to be higher than normal.
